Start Here!

Just over 20 years ago, I gave up my job for a year, and set off to travel with my backpack. The first leg, Nottingham to Nairobi overland took me across the Sahara and through central Africa, luckily before the war in Rwanda spilled over into neighbouring Zaire.

Eventually the trip extended to a complete round-the-world tour. 20 years later a business trip to China, with the opportunity to see the astonishing changes in that time, has finally motivated me to start writing down my experiences from 1991-2.

Originally I wanted to call this blog "from Ouagadougou to Wagga Wagga", but after trying it I realised that even I couldn't spell the resulting url! An alternative would have been "the kindness of strangers", but that's already been taken, by Kate Adie and then Lonely Planet themselves.

Hence "around the world in 1991".

If you're really keen, please start from the beginning here, and read from oldest to newest.
